Right, but here this behaviour is implemented by X-server itself, AFAIK.

On MacOSX some applications do that. Examples are: Terminal and above
mentioned Aquamacs Emacs.

Yes, I don't think it makes sense to do by default. But it may be
especially convenient for users working in different OSes (Unix and
MacOS).
