Debian (and Ubuntu for that matter) has rather fine-grained packages.
Hence we have devoted this problem an entry in our FAQ:

http://qt.gitorious.org/qt-creator/pages/FrequentlyAskedQuestions :

"Q: What development packages from the distribution are needed on Ubuntu?
A: apt-get install libglib2.0-dev libSM-dev libxrender-dev
libfontconfig1-dev libxext-dev"

In your case, you were missing libSM, the session management library of X11.
