[Qt-creator] Is there a way to load qtcreator plugins 'manually'?

No. You have to do the real updating in a separate process, and that needs to make sure Qt Creator is closed.
E.g. like it is done with the UpdateInfo plugin (in qt creator sources), which uses the qt installer framework which does the ugly work.
