I should re-read more carefully, and also explore things in more depth.
I'm a bit surprised to see how much these new windows behave like the main window (certain actions disabled or proxying for the main window). Then again, I might not have noticed if Command-w (Ctrl-w) didn't leave an "empty" window around that can be closed with the mouse (maybe on MS Windows and Linux Alt-F4 remains effective and closes the window after closing the last document?).
