"Repository"? Sounds to me like you are using the "open source driver", right? Haven't tried that one (myself I have a cheap ATI 3850 at home, and I am using ATI's own (closed source) driver), but usually the open source drivers provide "basic functionality - and if you're lucky you even get 3D acceleration" - something between that.

I am not saying that the closed source drivers are more stable or so, it's just like the open source drivers are a little bit behind the vendor's own drivers, in terms of functionality. So maybe you want to give ATIs own driver a chance? (And I don't know how recent your ATI x1600 card is, I lost a bit of overview in the graphic card's market in the last few years ;)
