Yeah, KMail for instance supports this cleanly!

I'm not sure, but am surprised to hear that Thunderbird is not "mailing list
ready" out-of-the-box... the mail headers produced on this list are fully
compliant to all standards. If TBird can't cope with it, it's up to their
devs to change its behaviour.
