The Chinese characters here are U+2F00 U+6800 U+6F00 U+6D00 U+6500.

Those look "suspicious"..... they ALL have 0x00 as their low byte. I'd guess there's an endian-ness problem somewhere, and they should have been the byte-swapped versions U+002F U+0068 U+006F U+006D U+0065. Which would spell out "/home".

If you "decode" the remaining filenames in the same way, I bet they'll all make sense as typical paths.

Are you doing this on a SPARC machine, by any chance? IIRC, those are big-endian, whereas most other current platforms are little-endian. I don't know exactly what went wrong - maybe a missing or incorrect configure test, or a code bug somewhere? - but I'd say you should be checking big/little-endian issues carefully.
