Not to mention, Nokia would cost them a lot more than they have cash for. It simply doesn't make sense from that perspective.
With the Elop plant-and-take-over they essentially got what Google is getting out of the Motorola Mobility (hardware-wise), for only $1Billion USD as opposed to $12.5Billion USD.
The interesting similarities is that Motorola Mobility (like Nokia) has not been doing well with selling handsets for a few years (though a lot 
longer than Nokia).
The interesting difference though is that Motorola Mobility had already 
made a commitment to going Android, while Microsoft forced WP7 on Nokia.

Probably to keep Nokia NA from going Android after Elop leaves...
