It's quite simply so they have hardware patents and so can counter sue 
*******s like Apple and Microsoft, which leaves the latter in a pickle 
when they're trying to sue Android phone manufacturers for software 
patent infringements. The sooner software patents are abandoned the 
better for everyone (except lawyers).

Microsoft make more money from Android than from Windows phones because 
they are taking money from people to prevent bogus lawsuits that smaller 
companies don't have the money to defend. Ridiculous.
