That's why I mentioned later on "... if it exists" ;) At least on a Mac I *think* it does not exist by default (it exists in my case, since MacPorts created/modified it, and at least one entry is manually edited by me).
Haven't checked on a "new user account", neither on Mac nor Ubuntu...
But aren't files of the form ".profile.local" read as well? I think older SuSE distros managed the .profile file, and the user was supposed to manually edit the "very local" settings in this "local" config file which was then evaluated from the actual .profile. And most likely the .profile.local would not exist for the majority of SuSE users (if I may use the term "majority" in this context ;)
