[PySide] QHostInfo.locateHost marked private in typesystem

I was looking for a convenient way to confirm the existence of a computer
on a local network and found documentation for QHostInfo.locateHost but in
the typesystem file for the network, locateHost is defined to be private?

Is there a particular reason locateHost is private?
Is there any way to use it without recompiling with it marked as public?
