I think the best thing you can do is break binary compatibility in 5.1.1. 
There is not that much time until the next release, and there will probably 
not be too many deployments within that period. 

If you warn about the upcoming BC break on the known issues page for 5.1.0, 
and document it in the 5.1.1 release notes, that should be sufficient notice for 
those who will be affected.
